Internal Resistance based State of Charge Estimation for Lead acid and Lithium ion Batteries - A Simulink Approach

Estimating the state of charge is important for any battery operated device. In case of automobile batteries, which are designed to deliver large power, many methods such as open circuit voltage based, ampere hour counting based, impedance based are used for calculating the state of charge. Internal resistance of a battery at a particular temperature directly gives the information about the state of charge. For automobile lead acid and lithium ion batteries, a model based estimation of state of charge based on internal resistance is carried out in this work. A simulink model is made for discharging the battery. The model uses dual pulse discharge method for calculating the internal resistance. The battery is discharged initially for low current and then for high current. The time period is selected in such a way that pure ohmic internal resistance is calculated. The obtained result shows the variation of state of charge with respect to internal resistance. The variation is large at lower values of state of charge for both the batteries. But the lead acid battery shows more variation than the lithium ion battery when state of charge is varied from 90% to10%.
